The cable car that starts from Arroyo de la Miel in Benalmádena – next to Tivoli – is a really fun excursion, especially for families with children and nature lovers. The ride on the cable car offers breathtaking views of the coast and when you reach the top of the mountain there is a restaurant, daily shows with birds of prey and several hiking trails to choose from.
If you are afraid of heights, the cable car in Benalmádena is probably not for you. But for the rest of us, the ride in the small, sealed metal carriage with plastic windows is an experience of the highest order.
You ride in a small carriage that is led out on a cable stretched between the city centre and the Monte Calamorros mountain. The mountain is 800 metres high, so the ride offers a steady and a steep ascent. The views are breathtaking of the area’s rocky terrain and the vast, azure Mediterranean Sea that gets bigger and bigger as you reach the top of the mountain. The trip on the cable car takes about fifteen minutes and runs on a shuttle service for most of the day.
Once up there, it is possible to go further out on the mountain on your own, just as it is possible to visit one of the birds of prey shows that are organized several times a day. There is a bird sanctuary on the mountain, with daily shows where it is possible to see vultures, owls and large eagles. And if you sit on one of the benches on the left-hand side, you can expect an eagle to land on your head at some point. It’s part of the show, a small eagle jumping from head-to-head!
There are several small stalls and cafés near the cable car and bird sanctuary, so it’s possible to refuel before continuing. If you’re brave enough, you can follow one of several routes from the top of the mountain down to the coast.
