Mijas is a separate municipality and is divided into three different areas, Mijas pueblo which is located in the mountains, Las Lagunas which is a modern built-up area and Mijas Costa which is a 12 km long coastal strip with various small resorts, with La Cala de Mijas in the centre.
Take the A7 motorway west towards Marbella and you will reach Mijas Costa in 20 minutes. You can also take the municipal bus there from the bus square in Fuengirola.
The coastline between Fuengirola and Marbella
The coastline includes El Chaparral, La Cala, El Combo, Calahonda and residential areas such as Riviera del Sol and Sitio de Calahonda with plenty of holiday homes ranging from small apartments to large villas.
The beaches have various water sports activities and there are supermarkets, bars, restaurants, and fine golf courses, sports facilities and more. Mijas Costa is home to many foreign nationals both permanently and as summer visitors.
The old charm is still there.
In La Cala de Mijas, the Andalusian charm of the old fishing village still lives on. Now many foreigners have moved here and there are bars, restaurants, schools, libraries, shops, post offices and more. There are also street markets selling fruit, vegetables, ceramics, clothes, flowers and more.
Playa Butibamba
The playa in La Cala de Mijas is a beach suitable for those who want to relax during the day and party in the evening – with darkness the beach comes alive.
The beach is about 1.5 kilometers long but the promenade that starts here can take you all the way to Playa Cabopino. There are both some rocky areas and some areas of sandy beach. The Butiplaya has the Blue Flag award for its cleanliness and quality.
The playa is usually quite crowded, mainly because it’s in the center, but if you get to the beach in time, you’ll find a good spot. Parasols, sun loungers and boats can be hired on site and there are several chiringuitos where you can sample some of the local gastronomy. Park your car in Mijas and walk there in five minutes.
A fantastic walk
You can walk from La Cala de Mijas to Cabopino on the so-called Senda Litoral, which is a large, unified seafront promenade being developed along the entire Costa del Sol. One of the most beautiful stretches is the boardwalk at La Cala de Mijas. Read more about the walk and Senda Litoral.
